University of Manchester named most sustainable university in Europe

10 December 2023

The University of Manchester has been ranked top in the UK and Europe, and third in the world, in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings for Sustainability.

The ranking follows the news of Manchester winning the ‘2030 Climate Action’ prize at the prestigious UK & Ireland Green Gown Awards in recognition of its “forward looking and innovative” work to decarbonise the University's operations.

Dr Julian Skyrme, Manchester’s Director of Social Responsibility, said: “This ranking by QS uses a wide range of unique evidence points drawing on our research, teaching, public engagement and university operations. A remarkably similar picture has emerged to that found in the THE Impact Ranking, where we are also top in Europe.

"This success reflects the impact that thousands of our staff, students, alumni and external partners make to improve our world and should be a source of pride for our whole community.”

The QS sustainability ranking evaluates universities based on data from the QS World University Rankings, including information from surveys and research output related to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The ranking uses more than 75 data points, grouped into nine lenses, to rank institutions in three main categories: environmental impact, social impact, and governance.
