The University of York is based in the historic city of York and is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, one of the 24 leading research universities in the UK. Established in 1963, York is a collegiate university and students belong to one of nine colleges who provide accommodation and academic departments. There are around 16,000 students currently enrolled.
A former winner of the University of the Year award from both Times Higher Education and the Sunday Times, York is also just one of six post-war universities to have appeared in the world’s top 100 universities. The University has also won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for research in Archaeology, Computer Science and Health Economics.
York also place a huge focus on extra-curricular activity, with free second language tuition in the first year, a strong sporting provision and the York Award, which aims to improve employability through work placements and volunteering activities.
The International Office runs a free orientation programme of talks and events aimed at helping all new international students, as well as providing support with visas, banking, employment and other issues. In addition, there is a dedicated international student support service and English language training unit which provides university-funded language tuition to all international students, including one-to-one tuitions and summer schools.
Following the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, York ranked 14th overall in the UK. The proportion ‘world-leading’ 4* research was among the highest of any UK university and eight departments were ranked in the top five for their subject.
International students are provided with accommodation for the full duration of their course, provided they apply by the deadlines. All accommodation is on or within walking distance of the main campus and deliberately mixed by subject so it is easy to meet students from all departments. Each college has its own accommodation, with 4,000 rooms available in total. Most rooms are en suite and there are catering options available on both campuses.
Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, York remains the religious capital of the North of England, being the seat of one of Britain’s two archbishops and the impressive York Minster cathedral. It features a wide variety of architecture dating back to the original Roman city walls in some parts. It is a city of culture, with numerous theatres and concert halls, as well as small independent cinemas and restaurants. London is just two hours away by train, with the main University campus itself situated about 20 minutes’ walk from the city centre.
My consultant was very helpful and motivating. She helped me every step of the way, even when the deadline was so close. I feel I could not have done it without her. I'd highly recommend this service to any and all of my many friends interested.
