University of Derby Services for International Students

There is a friendly welcome awaiting you at Derby. Our dedicated International Student Centre was ranked number five in the world in the International Student Barometer. The team offers services, advice and social activities which will help you settle smoothly into life in the UK. You will discover secure, affordable accommodation in our excellent halls of residence too.

The University runs a pickup service from Heathrow, Manchester and East Midlands airports for new international starters, and this is followed up by an induction program which takes place in the week before term begins. All students also have access to a dedicated Welfare Advisor.

We fully understand that there are limits to what you can bring with you to the UK.  So, if you are moving into one of our halls of residence, we will provide you with a free arrival pack, bed pack and kitchen pack as soon as you get here. They include essential items of food, cutlery and bedding. This is just our way of helping you to settle in.

The University of Derby was ranked 2nd most recommended UK Modern University and number 5 for International Student Centre Support in the International Student Barometer 2016 and 81.1% of our international graduates are in a graduate job or in further study after completing their degree (DELHE 2015). In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 75% of Univeristy of Derby was classed as ‘internationally significant’.

University of Derby Accommodation

The University owns and manages halls of residence in both Derby and Buxton. These offer a variety of accommodation – ranging from standard rooms in flats shared by up to six people to en-suite apartment rooms – located just a short walk from the campus, local shops, bars and restaurants.

Derby’s international students rate its accommodation services highly. In the 2016 i-graduate International Student Barometer – a recognised global benchmark – Derby was ranked:

  • First in the UK and second in the world for welcoming international students on arrival
  • Second in the UK and ninth in the world for the support on offer from the accommodation office
  • Third in the UK for overall quality of accommodation

If you apply before 31 July of the year in which you plan to join us, Derby guarantee that accommodation in our halls of residence will be reserved for you, for at least the first year of your studies.

University of Derby Location

In the heart of the UK, the University of Derby is easy to reach by road, rail and air. Our main campuses are based in the vibrant city of Derby and the Peak District spa town of Buxton. They are friendly, culturally diverse and safe places, with high standards of living and prices much cheaper than in bigger cities. Offering a great social life when you want it but a relaxed, calm atmosphere when you need to concentrate, they are the ideal setting to enjoy your university experience to the full.    

You are never at a loss for something to do in Derby or Buxton – with music, dining, cinema, theatre, festivals and sport of every kind. The nearby Peak District National Park offers stunning landscapes, impressive stately homes and exhilarating outdoor activities too.

The nearest airport to the Derby campus is East Midlands Airport and is less than 20 minutes away. For the Buxton campus Manchester airport is more convenient and takes around 90 minutes to travel to.
