University of South Wales Overview

The University of South Wales was formed in 2013 following the merger of the University of Glamorgan and University of Wales. It can trace its roots back to 1841 and is now one of the largest universities in Britain, with over 24,000 students from 120 different countries enrolled. It is based on five campuses in South Wales - Cardiff, Treforest, Newport, Glyntaff and Caerleon - each catering to different subject areas.

95% of University of South Wales graduates are in employment or further study within six months of graduating, while the institutions ranked first in the UK for Maths and Chemistry following the National Student Survey 2012.

The University benefits from a wide range of partnerships, including British Airways and the National Health Service, and employability is helped by a focus on simulated and specific learning. The University of South Wales also has an internationally recognised film school, as well as one of the UK’s oldest photography schools. The University is a member of the St David’s Day Group, which links Welsh research universities, and focuses mainly on applied research subjects.

University of South Wales Services for International Students

The University of South Wales provide various arrival services for international students, including pickups from Cardiff and Heathrow Airports. The International Welcome Programme is a social programme for newly arrived international students to get to know each other and learn about British culture. South Wales also offers a number of English courses for international students, ranging from general pre-sessional courses to more specific subjects like English for Aviation.

University of South Wales Accommodation

Halls of Residence providing over 1,800 places are available on or near all five campuses, with Treforest and Glyntaff and Caerleon and Newport sharing facilities due to their proximity. While most are university-owned, halls of residence on the Cardiff campus are privately-run. Many rooms are en suite and most are in shared flats of three to six students, but studio apartments are also available at Newport.

University of South Wales Location

The University of South Wales is situated on five campuses in southern Wales, originally part of two separate universities. All are within close proximity and cover the cities of Newport and Cardiff, as well as quieter sites in Glyntaff, Caerleon and Treforest. The area is known as the 'gateway to Wales' and is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and historical sites. Though deep-rooted in cultural heritage, it is constantly developing and has seen major investments in recent years. Both cities have good transport links, with an international airport just outside the capital and London only two hours away by train.
