Overview

Founded in 1883, the school has just celebrated its 125th anniversary. It is as popular as it has ever been, and it was recently described as 'educationally exceptional' in a national newspaper.

We are a major 7 day a week boarding schools in the North-East, which is an unspoilt and beautiful part of the UK. Over 95% of our pupils in the senior school are British (including over 85% of our boarders). We have a further 190 pupils in our prep school.

Whilst we are proud of the full and varied education we offer, above all we are proud of our academic results. Over the last 10 years have seen record results at A level and GCSE. Every year our leavers go on to study at some of the top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

We are a top traditional British boarding school, but we value having international students in our boarding community. They are fully integrated into the life of the school. Recently a House Captain of our senior boys' boarding house was from Holland and a Deputy Head boy from the Ukraine. We currently have students from USA, India, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Germany. We keep numbers from each country low so that overseas pupils benefit from speaking English as much as possible. ESL is provided free of charge for most pupils.

Unique Points

As a full 7 day a week boarding school we are unique in so much as only 15% of our 200 boarders are from overseas. Furthermore we are situated in our own 50 acre estate in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the UK. It is a very safe environment, only a 10 minute walk from the beautiful market town of Barnard Castle. Our fees (at under £20,000 per year) are 'uniquely' good value as we are actually one of the top boarding schools in the north. ESL ist free. Our academic results have hit record highs : 69% A-B grade at A level, and over 50 A*-A grade at GCSE. Outstanding sport, and over 100 activities on offer.
