Giggleswick
School offers co-educational boarding; it is located 1.25 hours from Manchester
airport close to the market town of Settle. The School was founded in 1512 and
has a long and successful history. It has adapted to the times - £15m has been
spent in recent years on new facilities - without changing its core values of
respect, tolerance and kindness.
There are 385 Senior School pupils aged from 11-18 and 80 in the Junior School.
Boarding is offered from 9 years. The curriculum is high quality and broadly
traditional. Targets are set and monitored by individual tutors, who also
provide advice on university applications and careers. Students go on to top
universities including Oxbridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial, Warwick, Durham. Music,
Sport and Creative Arts are also high quality.
As well as the School's full-time courses, the Giggleswick International Summer
School runs from 11 July - 3 August, providing intensive English language
teaching, cultural and social activities for 11-16 year olds.
The School was inspected in November 2009. In terms of the curriculum, teaching
and learning and pastoral care seven categories were graded
"outstanding" and two were "good, with many aspects
outstanding". The Ofsted inspection graded the boarding provision
"outstanding.
Unique Points
With
international students representing only 17% of senior school pupils, Giggleswick
prides itself on the integration of its international community; our policy is
to have no more than two students with the same native language per year in any
boarding house. The quality of relationships between staff and pupils is
exceptional; from Year 11 pupils choose their own personal tutor, to guide them
through GCSE and A levels and on to University. Our location, which is rural
but in walking distance from the local small town, is safe and an ideal place
in which young people can learn and develop.
Entry Requirements
Offer based on interview (if applicable) and school report/grades. Test of English Language and Maths ability required. Interviewed in home country when possible, or at Giggleswick if studying in England. For Pre-A level IELTS equivalent of 5.0; for A level 5.5. For International Summer School all abilities catered for. Students tested on arrival and placed according to ability.
