University of Sheffield's  unique approach to archaeological research draws upon the integrated strengths of the humanities, natural and physical sciences and contributes to their specialisms in Prehistoric to Medieval Europe as well as Landscape and Funerary Archaeology, Material Culture Studies, Bioarchaeology and the Archaeology of the Mediterranean. 

Fieldwork is also an important aspect of all of their courses. They aim to give their students as much practical experience as possible. Students can learn excavation techniques, geophysical surveying, and how to analyse and interpret materials. If they want more experience, they can apply to work on research projects during the summer holidays.

University of Sheffield's programmes at both undergraduate and masters level combine a focus on a particular region, time period or approach to Archaeology with flexible options – allowing students to achieve specialist knowledge in their chosen area as well as experience across the broad spectrum of Archaeology practised in the department.

University of Sheffield's department is home to a new suite of labs and teaching spaces in the Ella Armitage Building. These are designed to house our world-renowned collections in zooarchaeology, human osteology, biological anthropology, palaeoanthropology, materials science, archaeobotany, environmental archaeology and materials science.
