The school was founded at the bequest of Sir John Port of Etwall, who
died on 6 June 1557, leaving funds to found a Grammar School on the
condition that the students of the school pray daily for the souls of
his parents and relatives. The school stands on the site of a 12th Century Augustinian Priory and is divided into 10 houses, 6 for boys and 4 for girls. The 2013 A Level results achieved by our Upper Sixth pupils were very
good: 16% of entries achieved an A* grade and over half the entries
(52.5%) achieved A*A grades. The 2013 GCSE results achieved by our O-Block (Year 11) pupils were
excellent: 32.3% of GCSE entries by O-block were awarded an A* and 66.8%
of GCSE entries achieved A*A.
Unique Points
The school's motto, Porta Vacat Culpa ("the gate is free from blame"), is a quotation from Ovid's Fasti. The gate' (Porta) refers to the school's arch and, by a synecdoche of pars pro toto the school itself, whilst also being a pun on the name of the school's founder, Sir John Port. The school has a long sporting tradition and alumni include 100m Gold Medallist Harold Abrahams and a number of first-class cricketers. The famous author Roald Dahl is another alumnus. The school has overseas campuses in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, so combines ancient tradition with a modern international outlook.
Entry Requirements
All pupils joining Repton at 13+ will normally take Common Entrance examinations in their final year at preparatory school. For those children not currently at a prep school, we have our own
Non-Common Entrance papers. Candidates are examined in Mathematics,
English, Science and Reasoning and examinations are usually held late in
the Michaelmas Term prior to entry. We would also expect to receive a satisfactory report from a candidate’s current school. Entry to the Sixth Form is subject to a minimum requirement of 5 B
grades at GCSE. Candidates must achieve at least a B grade at GCSE in a
subject to be studied at AS-level, and an A grade in the case of
Mathematics, any Science or a Modern Foreign Language. We must also
receive a satisfactory report from a candidate’s current school and all
applicants must also take our Sixth Form entry examinations, either at
Scholarship or General entry level.
