Scholarships at Bournemouth University

Entry

For courses starting in January 2025, September 2025 and January 2026. Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Eligibility

• Any overseas applicant for either a full-time taught or part-time structured postgraduate course delivered on campus or Master's by research delivered on campus.

• You must have achieved a minimum of an upper second-class Honours degree (or international equivalent grades - see below), or a CPE with a merit profile.

Exclusions

• If you are applying for a Postgraduate Diploma, distance learning course or certain professional development and Postgraduate Diploma courses taught by the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, you will not be eligible for this award.

• Eligible students on MSc Public Health, MA Social Work, MSc Physician Associate Studies and MSc Nutrition & Behaviour will receive the award.

• You can receive this scholarship alongside a Sports or Music scholarship, but cannot receive any other academic award.

• Part-time, student-driven and distance learning (i.e online courses) are not eligible.

Value

• January 2025 entry: £3,750 (tuition fee reduction).

• September 2025 and January 2026 entry: Either £2,000 or £4,500 depending on academic achievement.

Entry

Eligibility

Any international applicant (for fee purposes) applying for a full-time undergraduate course at BU and who achieves equivalent to ABB or above at A-level and enquivalences table for September 2025 entry.

Exclusions

• Applicants for Bournemouth University courses offered through UK partner colleges are not eligible for this scholarship

• If you have been awarded any other BU scholarship then you are not eligible for this scholarship (except the Sport and Music Scholarships).

Value

£2,500 (tuition fee reduction) for the first year of your study (Level C, I or H).

• Any Thai student who has completed a relevant course at Assumption University of Thailand.

• You must be resident in Thailand at the time of application.

• You will automatically receive this award as a student from Assumption University of Thailand.

• You must be studying a relevant course with the Bournemouth University Business School.

Exclusions

Recipients of this scholarship cannot be in receipt of any other BU scholarship.

Value

£2,500 (tuition fee reduction).

Any student from Assumption University of Thailand who is going on to study an applicable course with the Bournemouth University Business School will automatically receive this scholarship provided that they have the relevant qualification.

You don’t need to apply and will receive the scholarship in the form of a tuition fee reduction during your first year.

• You must be resident in Indonesia at the time of application.

• You will automatically receive this award as a student from BINUS.

• You must be studying a relevant course with the Bournemouth University Business School.

• Recipients of this scholarship cannot be in receipt of any other BU scholarship.

Value

• £2,500 (tuition fee reduction).

Any student from BINUS who is going on to study an applicable course with the BU Business School will automatically receive this scholarship provided that they have the relevant qualification.

Any student from IPAG Business School  who is going on to study an applicable course with the BU Business School will automatically receive this scholarship provided that they have the relevant qualification.

Entry

For courses starting in January 2025, September 2025 and January 2026. Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Eligibility

• Any applicant for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course at BU.

• You must be able to demonstrate that you are a talented musician or vocalist, and that you have been involved in ensemble activity.

Value

Music scholars receive free music lessons and other benefits in kind, such as examination fees and assistance with buying music. This amounts to approximately £600 per year.

Application deadline

31 August if your course starts in September and 30 November if your course starts in January. Late applications may be considered if there are funds remaining.

Entry

For courses starting in January 2025, September 2025 and January 2026. Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Eligibility

• Any applicant for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course delivered at BU

• Be a high performing sportsperson and have the desire to continue to develop in the sporting arena, as well as academically.

Value

£0 to £5,000 and/or sport science support.

Application deadline

31 August if your course starts in September and 30 November if your course starts in January.

The BU Sport Scholarship is available to high-level sporting athletes coming to study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at BU. The scholarship is designed to provide funding you may need to develop your sporting abilities and take them to the next level.

You can apply for up to £5,000 of finances to put towards your sporting development and could be any of the following: coaching, equipment, competition entry fees, travel expenses and/or other support services.

You must demonstrate excellence in your chosen sport, and be part of a Regional, National and/or International squad and compete at that level. Student athletes receiving a scholarship will ideally represent BU in the BUCS programme (League and Individual), as well as themselves and/or their club at regional, national or international level. Individual student athletes need to be competitive with the top performers within the BUCS programme.

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will need to meet with the High-Performance Team to assess how the funds will help you throughout the year and it will be your responsibility to commit to the following:

• Attend all expected academic activities (Dual Career Support Provided)

• Attend 75% of sport specific training sessions

• Attend 85% S&C sessions 

• Engage with all support services offered 

• Represent BU in sporting competitions where possible 

• Provide stories of your performance activities.

As part of your application for a BU Sport Scholarship, you will have to attend our trial process and be assessed by our coaches and to help with this, please ensure your application is supported by a reference from a High-Performance Coach or National Governing Body coach. If you are applying for a sport that sits outside our performance BUCS programme, you will need to ensure that two references are sent alongside your application and demonstrate how you will maintain your level of training.

Eligibility

• Any student who is a citizen of Turkey, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, or China and who intends to return there at the end of the period of study.

• Eligible courses are MSc Adult Nursing, MSc Marketing Management, MA 3D Computer Animation and MSc Digital Health

• You must have achieved a minimum of an upper second-class Honours degree in the UK (or equivalent)

• You must have achieved the minimum Chevening English language requirement - minimum IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with minimum 5.5 in each component or equivalent

• You must have completed at least two years' work experience before applying.

Value

A full Chevening Scholarship includes:

• tuition fee waiver

• flights

• accommodation

• living expenses.

The deadlines are country specific, but the application window is usually between August and November each year for September entry in the following year

• Any international student applying for a full-time taught Master's degree at BU who is a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country at the time of application and who intends to return there at the end of the period of study

• You must hold an undergraduate degree that is equivalent to at least an upper-second class Honours degree in the UK

• Have achieved the minimum Chevening English language requirement - minimum IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with minimum 5.5 in each component or equivalent

• Have completed at least two years' work experience before applying.

Value

A full Chevening Scholarship includes:

• tuition fee waiver

• travel to and from your home country

• an arrival allowance

• the cost of an entry clearance (visa) application

• a grant for thesis or dissertation

• an excess baggage allowance

• a monthly personal living allowance.

Postgraduate scholarships for applicants from low and middle income Commonwealth countries. Funded jointly with the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Entry

For courses starting in September 2025. Scholarships cannot be deferred.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, you:

• Must be from one of the countries included in the scheme (visit the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships website for full details)

• Are expected to hold a first degree at either first-class or upper second-class level

• Must meet the English language requirements and have them in place before the application deadline

• Must not presently be living or studying in a developed country

• Must not have previously studied in a developed country

• Must have applied to study the following course at BU:

  • MSc Disaster Management

Exclusions

Applicants for Postgraduate Diplomas are not eligible for this award. You cannot be in receipt of any other BU scholarships.

Value

The Shared Scholarship covers:

• Tuition fees

• Maintenance/living cost stipend

• Return flights

• Thesis grant

• Study travel grant (if applicable)

• A one-off arrival allowance

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Bournemouth University is offering two scholarships to students in Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico applying for postgraduate courses in September 2025.

The GREAT Scholarships 2025 programme, launched by the British Council together with UK universities, supports postgraduate students from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam to access world-class UK higher education opportunities. The scholarship programme offers financial support of a minimum of £10,000 to students pursuing one-year postgraduate study in the UK. Students can apply for courses in a range of subjects, at institutions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Eligibility

Applicants for full-time taught postgraduate courses who are resident in Indonesia, Thailand or Mexico.

Applicants from Thailand can apply for one of the following courses:

• LLM Public International Law

• LLM International Commercial Law

• LLM International Tax Law

• LLM Intellectual Property.

Applicants from Indonesia or Mexico can apply for any BU full-time postgraduate course.

You must have achieved a minimum of a UK upper second-class Honours (2:1) degree (or overseas equivalent) that is relevant to your postgraduate study.

Exclusions

Applicants for Postgraduate Diplomas are not eligible for this award. You cannot be in receipt of any other BU scholarships.
