As an international student, it's natural to feel overwhelmed and anxious at the thought of moving to another country to pursue your education. Don't worry if you feel that way, you are most definitely not alone, and things are easier to do than they may seem from the comfort of home.
We spoke to Hooran who studies an MSc in Global Health at the University of Glasgow to learn more about what it is like to study in Scotland and, if you wish to begin your application or have any questions, get in touch with SI-UK Nigeria today for a free consultation.
Preparing for Study at Glasgow
1. Arrange your visa
Check immediately whether you need a visa to study in Scotland! Most international students will have to apply for a Tier 4 visa to be able to study at the University of Glasgow, so check the visa requirements and get applying. Remember you should not book a flight until your visa is confirmed by the UK Embassy!
2. Get organised
Make sure you have all your important documents in order and make compartmentalised to-do lists so you know what needs to be done. Things such as checking in with your airline to confirm the amount of baggage you're allowed and then packing accordingly can make a huge difference - Glasgow is chilly, rainy and a bit tough to pack for if you come from a hot country like I do. I packed all my essentials and brought them from home, but I bought a lot of weather-appropriate affordable clothing from right here in Glasgow! It saved me luggage space too, so that's something to consider.
Other essentials to pack: knick knacks from home. Moving away isn't easy, and one of the best things you can do is make your room feel like home - bring pictures and anything else that makes you feel at home.
3. Attend events
While you're getting ready for your move, you'll start getting emails from the University about essential events taking place: Freshers Week, registration and enrolment sessions.
- Freshers Week is a great way to meet new people, it's fun and it keeps you super busy throughout your first week. If you're a postgrad, don't worry, you can also take part in the fun! Keep an eye out on the information as it comes through and check your email.
- Secondly, you'll have to register academically and financially. This entire process is doable from home and I recommend getting through it early so that if you have any issues, you can get them sorted out immediately when you arrive.
- Thirdly, check your course handbook and enrol for courses accordingly! This can be a bit confusing for a first timer so don't be afraid to reach out for help from your course administrators.
I hope these three tips get you started for your journey at University of Glasgow! It'll be a very exciting and challenging time for you in your life, so get set accordingly!
