IELTS assesses the English language proficiency of students applying to UK universities, testing reading, writing, speaking and listening ability across a range of different examinations.
Candidates can choose to study either an academic (education purposes) or general test (visa purposes) and they will be scored on a 9-band scale. The listening and speaking exams are the same for both types of test, but the reading and writing components are different.
IELTS Fact: Over 2 million tests were taken last year and it is the only major English language test giving you a two-way face to face language speaking assessment!
Three reasons why IELTS is so important
1. The better your IELTS score, the more options you have
Students who take the IELTS exam are scored on a 9-band scale. A score of 5.5 is good enough to get on to many courses in the UK, but for certain subjects at undergraduate and masters level, a score above 6.5 means you will have more options available in terms of courses and institutes.
2. All UK universities accept IELTS
All UK universities and higher education institutions accept IELTS as proof of proficiency in the English Language.
3. It is accepted worldwide
IELTS is recognised by over 10,000 organisations in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, the USA and UK, including institutes of education, employers, governments and immigration authorities.
