Loughborough University was named the world’s best sports university by QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2017, narrowly beating off competition from Sydney and Queensland in Australia.
The new ranking was based on surveying academic staff that declares a speciality in the subject, and employers who seek to employ graduates that specialise in the discipline. It is also based on research output and impact, with both citations and paper output measured over a five-year period.

Two reasons why Loughborough is the best in the world for sport
1. High quality research
Loughborough University Sports Technology Institute is a £15m facility housing the Sports Technology Research Group, whose mission is to have a positive global, social and economic impact on sport through excellent engineering research, teaching and enterprise.
Around 50 academics, research associates, technicians and PhD students carry out wide-ranging research including athletic footwear, technical apparel, protective equipment, balls, bats, clubs, rackets and fitness equipment.
2. World class facilities
Loughborough University is home to the country’s largest concentration of world-class facilities across a wide range of sports. They include an indoor athletics centre and outdoor stadium, sports halls and all-weather pitches, a 50 metre swimming pool, squash, badminton and netball courts, an indoor tennis centre and outdoor courts, and state of the art fitness centres.
What happens next?
All of this means that Loughborough produces elite sports people and support staff than anywhere else in the UK. Of the 382 athletes that Team Great Britain took to the Rio 2016 Olympics, 28 studied at Loughborough and the medals they won would have placed them 17th in the final medal table!
