Scholarships at Cranfield University

Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. The application period runs from August to November each year. 

Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme makes awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the UK. Awards are typically for a one-year master’s degree. The scholarships are for talented individuals who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields, including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion and academia. Applicants should be high-calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership.

Chevening Scholars come from over 110 countries worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU), and this year the scholarships will support approximately 700 individuals. There are over 41,000 Chevening alumni around the world who together comprise an influential and highly-regarded global network.

What it covers

A full Chevening Scholarship normally* comprises:

• Payment of tuition fees (Chevening applies a tuition fee cap of £22,000 to MBA programmes - applicants will be expected to cover the remaining costs above the £22,000 cap);

• Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only;

• An arrival allowance;

• The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for you only;

• A departure allowance;

• A contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, where this is required;

• A travel top-up allowance;

• A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether you are studying inside or outside London. These rates are subject to annual review. Stipend payments will be made to you on or around the 21st of the month for the following full month. Where you arrive in the UK or leave the UK part way through the month, the stipend for that month will be adjusted as appropriate.

In Taiwan and Singapore the Chevening scholarship only comprises tuition fees and one visa application.

Who can apply

To be eligible for a Chevening award you must:

• Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country;

• Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended;

• Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate programme at a UK university - this is typically equivalent to an upper second class 2:1 honours degree in the UK;

• Have at least two years’ work experience (this may be up to five years for fellowship programmes - please refer to your country page for further details);

• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by July following your application submission;

• Meet the Chevening English language requirement by July following your application submission.

Commonwealth Scholarships for master’s and PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of selected Commonwealth countries.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development.

Students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK can apply for Commonwealth Scholarships for master’s or PhD study.

Purpose: to contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics who would not otherwise have been able to study in the UK.

Intended beneficiaries high-quality postgraduate students who have not studied extensively overseas before, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in the UK, and who have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries with the knowledge and leadership skills they acquire.

What it covers

• Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed).

• Approved tuition and examination fees.

• Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,133 per month (rates quoted at 2021-2022 levels).

• Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable.

• Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.

• Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.

• For PhD scholars, fieldwork grant towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to your fieldwork location), where approved.

• For PhD scholars, paid mid-term visit (airfare) to your home country (unless you have claimed, or intend to claim, spouse and/or child allowances during your scholarship, or have received a return airfare to your home country for fieldwork).

Who can apply

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person

• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country

• Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in the following September/October;

• If you are a PhD applicant, you must have the support of a potential supervisor from at least one UK university listed in your application form;

• Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.

The CSC would not normally fund a second UK master’s degree. If you are applying for a second UK master’s degree, you will need to provide justification as to why you wish to undertake this study.

What it covers

The scholarship covers part of the tuition fee and the amount you can be awarded is at the discretion of the course team for the course you have applied for.

Who can apply

In order to be considered, you need to show both aptitude and ability for the subject you have applied for. Scholarships are available for full-time master's courses. Scholarship students will be required to assist with activities to promote the awards and Cranfield's work around sustainability and cleantech solutions, through blogs, social media and by providing testimonials.

If awarded this scholarship, the scholar will not be eligible for any other Cranfield scholarship which may have already been offered.

Our courses are designed in conjunction with industry to ensure they equip our students with the practical skills to develop long standing careers in their chosen sector. The applied nature of our courses, within the themes of Environment, Agrifood, Energy and Water, enables our students to gain hands-on experience using industrial scale facilities.

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and provide a maximum of 200 word supporting statement on why you should be considered for this scholarship and how you would use your MSc to help you develop a sustainability focused career. Scholarship students will be required to assist with activities to promote the awards and Cranfield’s work around sustainability and clean tech solutions, through blogs, social media and by providing testimonials.

This year, in partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Cranfield University is offering a scholarship to one student in Bangladesh applying for selected full-time postgraduate Masters degrees.

This scholarship scheme is part of the GREAT Scholarships campaign, which has been launched by the British Council, together with UK universities, to support from a number of countries in accessing excellent UK higher education opportunities.

Please note that applicants should be passport holders and resident in Bangladesh.

The Manufacturing and Materials Excellence Scholarship is a merit-based. You are required to prepare a statement to demonstrate both aptitude and ability for the subject.  

The Cranfield University Manufacturing and Materials master's programmes have helped to develop many management and technology leaders through the intense, 12-month learning that bring synergies between academia, industry and policy makers. Alumni are in senior positions across the world.

Scholarship awards

Our Cranfield Merit Scholarships are designed to attract high quality students to our institution and therefore we have a scholarship scale to recognise those who demonstrate strong academic performance in line with our entry requirements.

Who is eligible?

• Awardees must be in possession of a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or international equivalent.

• If you are currently studying towards your qualification, you will still be considered for a Cranfield Merit Scholarship. If offered a place, the scholarship will be subject to meeting the entry requirements of the course.

• Cranfield Merit Scholarships are available for eligible applicants to all full-time postgraduate taught MSc degree programmes, offered on-campus through Cranfield School of Management for September 2025 entry, which you have accepted and paid your deposit.

• Applicants to the Full-time MBA programme are not eligible for these particular scholarships, however there is a large range of scholarship and funding opportunities available.

We welcome applications from any country. All applicants with a first class and upper second class honours degree, or international equivalent will be automatically considered.
