Did you know that there are alternatives to the traditional IELTS test? Coronavirus means that many IELTS test centres are now closed, but that does not mean you have to worry about finding proof of your English language ability. Autumn 2020 entry is going ahead at UK universities, and that means getting your application in order.
Many UK universities are accepting a variety of different English language tests for the first time, which means completing your application and proving English proficiency is easier than ever. To take an online English test, you will need the following:
- Computer
- Webcam
- Microphone
- Reliable internet connection
- Around 1-2 hours of privacy, depending on the test

Alternative English Tests for International Students
1. IELTS Indicator
The IELTS Indicator was recently released by the British Council and is accepted by an increasing number of UK universities, including the University of Surrey, a recent Times and Sunday Times University of the Year.
Students will be tested on Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and you will receive an indicative score for each component. The Test is live and students must book a slot ahead of time. Remember that the Indicator is not accepted by all universities, so speak with an SI-UK consultant before booking your test to ensure your desired university is using the test.
2. Duolingo (DET)
An increasing number of UK universities are now accepting the Duolingo test, including University College London, SOAS and the University of Sussex. Unlike the IELTS Indicator, the test does not need to be booked in advance, simply complete it in under one hour and then submit. Tests are certified within 48 hours.
3. TOEFL (iBT)
TOEFL, or the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a long established form of English language proficiency, already accepted by many UK universities. Higher scores are generally around the 95 mark, and standard scored around 88. Once you take the test online, it is valid for two years.
4. Password English Language Test
The Password English Language Test is accepted by a huge number of UK universities, including the University of Westminster, University of Birmingham and University of Lincoln. Generally this test is only available to students who have been made a conditional offer by the university in question and it is taken entirely online.
5. Pearson (PTE Academic)
The Pearson PTE Academic Test is widely accepted and assesses your English ability through English tasks which echo real life scenarios. Scores are valid for two years and a high mark is generally around 67.
