The University of St Andrews has topped the 2024 Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide ranking for the first time in 12 years.
Scotland's leading university also topped the recently released 2024 Guardian University Guide, meaning it is the first time that any UK university, other than those of Oxbridge, has led both major UK higher education league tables in the same year.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Sally Mapstone FRSE, said: “To make history by coming top in both the Times and Guardian University Guides in the same season is a special way to start a new academic year in St Andrews.
“This achievement belongs completely to our fantastic staff and hard-working students. It reflects a deep institutional commitment to a critical balance of world-leading research and teaching, and the ways in which St Andrews students respond to that."
Last year’s winner, the University of Oxford, placed 2nd overall, while the University of Cambridge, Oxford’s Oxbridge rival, placed 3rd in the UK. 131 universities were ranked in the 2024 edition across a range of metrics, including % of students getting First/2:1s, Teaching Quality and Student Experience.
University College London was named as 'University of the Year' while the University of Nottingham has been crowned the best university in the UK for sports.
