The University of Edinburgh has been named the most sustainable university in the UK following the release of the 2023 QS World University Rankings for Sustainability.
The University placed fourth globally (out of 700 higher education institutions) and scored 98.3 out of 100 for social impact and was the only UK-based institution to list among the world’s top 10 for environmental impact with a score of 81.5 out of 100.
Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, said: "These rankings reflect the efforts of our staff and students in making the University of Edinburgh more environmentally and socially responsible.
"Our own strategy aligns the University with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and we continue to deliver positive change locally and globally through our academic research, education, operations and partnerships. I’m really pleased to see our progress being recognised."
This is the first year that QS have made sustainability a key part of the QS World University Rankings framework as more students than ever pay attention to how a university is engaged with the environmental and social agenda.
Jessica Turner, CEO at QS, said: "QS aims to provide prospective students with independent insights into university records in improving sustainability and support universities in monitoring their progress as they strive to implement their ESG strategies and find solutions to unprecedented global challenges."
